After fatally overdosing on over-the-counter medication while attempting a popular TikTok craze, a 13-year-old kid from Ohio, US, passed away. The young man was participating in the "Benadryl Challenge," a video game that challenges players to take excessive amounts of the antihistamine to produce hallucinations.
Parents are being warned about the risky social media trend by the teen's parents. According to his family, Jacob Stevens spent a week on a ventilator before passing away. He took 12 to 14 pills of an over-the-counter antihistamine to cause hallucinations.
Jacob's father, Justin Stevens, told ABC6 that when he overdosed last weekend, his son was at home with friends.
The teenager reportedly started to lose control after undertaking the social media challenge, as seen by a video taken by his buddies.
Jacob's father reportedly commented, "It was too much for his body."He was placed on a ventilator as soon as he was taken to the hospital.Despite the doctor's best attempts, the boy passed away six days later and couldn't survive. The "worst day of his life," according to Jacob's father.
"No brain scan, there was nothing there," the distraught father added. They told us that we could keep him on the vent and that he could lie there, but they warned that he would never open his eyes, breathe normally, smile, walk, or speak.I'm going to do everything I can to make sure another child doesn't go through it, Jacob's grandmother told a local TV news station. The boy's family recalls him as a well-behaved, humorous, and affectionate youngster. No matter how horrible my day had been, Mr. Stevens recalled, "Jacob could make me smile. No one else could."
Legislators are being pushed to impose an age limit on the purchase of drugs like Benadryl.
